ERN and STUDENT ACCOUNTS
The following changes are essential for the establishment of student accounts. ERN is being rolled out to 100 schools this year and the rest of the state in March 2008.
The use of J and Year 6 will not be possible. Approximately half the schools did not do their roll over by the commencement of term 1 this year with unfortunate results.
Schools are informed that they must now use the pre-enrolment module and must not use the Year 6, Year J option for pre-enrolment. Schools must delete the year 6 and Year J if they have already started to enrol students for 2008 in this manner to avoid future problems. Schools must complete their roll over for 2008 by the commencement of term 1, 2008. Further communications will be going out in the near future from the teams concerned but it will be better if schools get this information ASAP.

USER ADVICE
In general, usernames and passwords should not be permanently stored in software, particularly if the computer is shared. Any time the user changes their password the software will need to be reconfigured for continued functionality.

Internet Filtering
Tips for staff in schools and TAFE
Often when requests to unblock or block websites are logged by staff in schools and TAFE, the requests lack essential information needed by the web filtering team in order to assess and make a decision about the action to be taken.
Some tips for making requests to the web filtering team are provided below.
? Rather than making a request to unblock a website, it may often be more practical for staff to capture a particular resource on a blocked site, outside of the DET network, and place that resource on a local server for student access. Staff should be aware of copyright issues when doing so.
? It is important for teachers to recognise that student websites will not be unblocked. Issues of security of both data and links prevent such sites being allowed.
? Requests to the Web Filter Team should always carry the specific URL in order for action to block or unblock a site to occur. Supporting evidence indicating a particular curriculum reference will assist this process.

Premier?s Reading Challenge Website Release
The new 2008 NSW Premier's Reading Challenge website will be available from Saturday 1st September
2007 at Premier?s Reading Challenge or via the DET portal for Government school students and staff.
Check out the PRC Memorandum for Principals titled ?Facing up to the Challenge?, featuring in this
week?s edition of InPrincipal. Login access to the new website will not be available to students and coordinators until March 2008.
IT Help Desk Support will be available to logged on coordinators from March to August of each Challenge
year.
